Can Sciatica be Cured? (Part 1)

This article is not a scientific account of sciatica, but my very personal experience of it, how it affected me and what I tried to do to recover or at least get some improvement. I tried to pass on some of the more general information about sciatica that I discovered on the internet and how it helped or did not help me on the road of recovery.

I discovered that there are a number of reasons why you “get” sciatica or sciatic lower back pain. 6. Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction.

I will try to explain what these important sounding terms means: –

1. Lumbar Herniated Disk.

A lumbar disk consists of an outer portion which contains a soft inner portion. When the fibrous outer portion ruptures, the softer inner portion leaks out into the spinal canal putting pressure on the spinal nerve. This will cause pain to travel down the nerve into the buttocks and down the leg.

Symptoms of a Lumbar Herniated Disc

  • Basically sciatica usually starts with a severe pain in the lower back, buttocks and the leg.
  • This pain can be followed by numbness or tingling and weakness in the leg, making it difficult to walk and dragging the foot.
  • The leg pain may in some cases even be more severe that the back pain
  • Sometimes this can also affect the bowel and bladder functions, at which point you are urged to consult a physician because it can point to a very serious medical condition.

L4-L5 and L5-S1 Disc Herniation Symptoms.

Most of these conditions will occur in the bottom lower part of the spell, affecting the L4-L5 or L5-S1 levels. Classic sciatica symptoms will be present and can lead to the following:

How Texting Hurts Your Posture and Your Spine

Smartphones and other mobile handheld devices make it easier to text and read email messages on the go. They are so convenient that most people can not imagine life without them, but this addiction comes at a price. It's now been proven that spending endless hours slumped over these devices can put you at risk for serious health problems.

In its Global Internet Trends & Screen Time Report for 2014, Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers, (KPCB) released some starting data on the time Americans spend looking down at mobile screens – PCS, tablets, and smartphones. Smartphones came up tops, as the most viewed media.

How Texting affects Posture

While you are texting or playing a portable video game, the neck is in an abnormal position, because the head and neck are angled forward, and the shoulders are rounded. This is commonly referred to as forward head post or FHP. The dangers of FHP are well documented.

Tilting the head forward causes bad posture, because it moves the head from the normal postural position, which ensures a healthy back and neutral strain. When the spelling is neutral, the ears and shoulders are on the same plane, and the shoulders are back. Adopting good posture puts minimal strain on the muscles and ligaments that support the spine. It also ensures efficient use of the muscles, and avoids unnecessary wear and tear on the spine.

Dr. Fishman coined the phrase because in recent years he noticed that a lot of young people were visiting his practice complaining of headaches, neck pain, and shoulder pain. He soon realized that the pain being experienced by these young patients was being caused by mobile technology, due to the many hours they spent texting – with their head angled forward.

A healthy neck has a cervical curve that points to the back of the neck, and this facilitates optimal health and function. However, for individuals with a text neck, the cervical spine is reversed, putting pressure on the spinal cord, and often resulting in spine degeneration.

The phenomenon has reached epidemic proportions in kids, because they spend many hours each week texting, and also playing games on their devices. The problem is expected to worsen, because mobile phones are now the device of choice for those wishing to access the internet.

Dr. Hansraj's research findings indicated that flexing the head forward by as little as 15 degrees, reflected in this weight increasing to 27 pounds. If the head is tilted forward to 60 degrees, this would increase the stress on the spine to 60 pounds. That weight on the upper spine can last for several hours each day, depending on how much time you spend honched over your smartphone.
